Rodeo

This weekend was the Great Plains Stampede Rodeo. We were supposed to go with some friends but because of a miscommunication we ended up going by ourselves. Color us rodeo snobs but it wasn't that great. The bull riding wasn't bad but the rest of the rodeo was pretty uneventful. Most of the calf ropers never caught a calf or even threw their lasso, same with the team ropers. But they did have a corral full of long horn cows that they drove through the arena at one point. That was pretty cool. Long horns are huge! I told Dean if he ever decides to get me a cow I want a long horn.

It was so dry that half way through the rodeo the arena was covered with a cloud of dirt. The best event was when they drug people on tarps behind horses in a relay race across the arena. Too bad that isn't a regular event. And apparently the rodeo is a big event in Altus because for a three day rodeo the stands were pretty packed. They also have a cattle drive through base every year. Dean happened to drive by during it and was really disappointed. There were only about 15 cows and about 30 cowboys on horses. We heard it was a big thing but by Dean's high standards it was pretty lame.

On a side note we finally got our basketball goal fixed. Our house had a basketball goal in the driveway but the hoop was ripped out of the backboard and was hanging by a couple bolts. The backboard where the hoop attaches was pretty ripped up. But Dean went out on Saturday and put it back up for us. The whole backboard is crooked and the pole has a slight slant and the hoop now is a little crooked too. But for a basketball goal that came with the house its not bad.

(This is how it looked before Dean fixed it.)

Now all we need is a net and some under 100 deg. weather. It is too dang hot to be outside now. Its not as humid as it is in Missouri and the wind blows here to help cool it down some but since we have been here it has been in the 100's almost every day. The only break we had was last week when it got down in the 80's for a couple of days. Perfect weather for a rodeo. But now its super hot again.

  1. When I saw the long horn cow picture I thought you bought a new pet. Did you teach your wiener dog... I mean Jag how to herd cattle? My last thought is, is it so hot there that the sky is on fire?

  2. Yes. We don't go outside for fear of melting. That's why the basketball goal is hanging so low... it's melting off. But Jag hasn't learned how to herd cows, but she's doing wonders with grasshoppers.
